What cookies are
A cookie is a small file a website saves in your browser. Websites use cookies to remember things, such as whether you are signed in. Some websites also use them to follow what you do, for advertising.
“Local storage” is a similar place in your browser where a website can keep small pieces of information. The law treats both in the same way, so this page covers both.
What Kaeelo stores today
Kaeelo sets no tracking cookies and no advertising cookies. A visitor who does not sign in gets no cookie at all. This is everything Kaeelo uses in your browser:
| Name | What it is for | How long it stays |
|---|---|---|
| kaeelo.session_token (a cookie) | Keeps you signed in as you move between pages. It is set when you sign in. | 30 days from when you last used Kaeelo, or until you sign out |
| kaeelo.state (a cookie) | Set only if you choose to sign in with Google or Microsoft. It checks that the person who comes back from their sign-in page is the one who left. | 5 minutes |
| kaeelo:theme (local storage) | Says whether to show the light or dark look, so the page does not flash the wrong one. Kaeelo reads it but has no switch for the dark look yet, so today it saves nothing here. | Until you clear your browser’s storage |
On the live site each cookie’s name starts with “__Secure-”. That tells your browser to send it only over an encrypted connection. The theme preference stays in your browser and is not sent to us.
The sign-in cookie
When you sign in, Kaeelo sets one cookie, kaeelo.session_token. It holds a long random code that says which sign-in is yours. It does not hold your name, your email address or anything you wrote. Scripts on the page cannot read it.
This cookie is “strictly necessary”. That means Kaeelo cannot work without it, so the law does not require us to ask your permission. It is not used to track you. The same is true of the five-minute cookie used when you sign in with Google or Microsoft.
Signing out removes the sign-in cookie. You can see every device you are signed in on, and sign any of them out, in Settings, then Security.
Analytics
Analytics tools count visits and show how a website is used. Kaeelo has no analytics installed today. If that changes, this page will say so first.
Your choices
You can clear cookies and local storage in your browser’s settings at any time. If you clear the theme preference, Kaeelo goes back to the light look.
If you block or clear the sign-in cookie, you are signed out and cannot sign in until you allow it again.
